Pathologies and treatment

The neurology unit of the Poitiers CHU treats all acute and chronic neurological pathologies. It is part of the neuroscience and locomotor center.

The neurology unit is composed of:

  • several hospital wards,
  • an outpatient center,
  • an area for additional examinations,
  • … and it is associated with the resource and research memory center (CMRR) and, for research, with the clinical investigation center (CIC).

The unit is tasked with “general neurology”, which is to say the possibility of providing neurological opinions for all patients having been referred by their general practitioners, their specialized private physicians, other CHU Poitiers units and other hospital centers.

To provide this service, a neurology doctor is on duty at the CHU 24/24h and a senior neurologist is on call 24/24h.

Neuro

The neurology unit also serves as a “recourse” for assessment and clinical care tasks in highly specific neurological fields:

  • treatment of cerebrovascular accidents, with a 20-bed neurovascular unit;
  • treatment of movement pathologies such as Parkinson’s and other extrapyramidal symptoms through performance of surgery for Parkinson’s disease by implantation of subthalamic stimulation*. Interventions are conducted in collaboration with the neurosurgery, neuro-radiology and neurophysiology unit.  Injection of botulinum toxins can also be carried out.

  • cognitive and/or degenerative neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s, memory impairment, in collaboration with the neuropsychology unit (composed of neuropsychologists, speech therapists and physicians) and the resource and research memory center;
  • sleep disorders and epilepsy, with nocturnal and videography recordings in collaboration with the sleep center;
  • multiple sclerosis, with dedicated consultations and the medical, psychological and social care services the best adapted to each patient. Multidisciplinary consultation in conjunction with our rehabilitation and health education nursing colleagues is likewise proposed.

Expert consultations for damage to the peripheral nerve and muscle, migraine, and brain tumor pathologie are also held.

EMERGENCY SERVICE

Neurological diseases at times require very urgent treatment, particularly for cerebrovascular accidents (strokes).

With this in mind, the neurology unit is present 24h/24h, 7 days a week, in the emergency wing, allowing patients to rapidly receive appropriate care.

Fibrinolysis is regularly performed in the unit through either arterial or venous route in close collaboration with the interventional neuroradiology unit.

A senior neurology doctor is also on operational duty  24h/24h, 7 days a week.

THERAPEUTIC EDUCATION

Therapeutic education is a major concern in the neurology unit.

Tasks in therapeutic education are essentially focused on patient autonomy. Getting to know the signs, symptoms and manifestations of his or her disease increases overall comprehension of the pathology and helps to render him or her fully independent.

Consulting nurses are dedicated to therapeutic education in cases of Parkinson’s, related diseases and multiple sclerosis.
