Palpebral and orbital pathologies

Treatment of palpebral abnormalities

Upper:

  • Ptosis (drooping and fall of the upper eyelid): corrective surgery rectifying the position of the upper eyelid.

  • Dermatochalasis (“baggy eyes”): excessive skin on the upper eyelid amputating the visual field

Lower :

  • Lower palpebral entropion
    Lower palpebral entropion

Entropion : inversion (turning inward) of the lower eyelid and the eyelash (cilium) irritating the surface of the eyeball (ocular globe).

  • Ectropion: eversion (turning outward) of the lower eyelid, source of a major risk of eye infection, pain, and unclean secretions agglutinating in the eyelashes; it necessitates surgical treatment.

  • Abnormal eyelash position: Often turned inwards, the eyelashes rub against the ocular surface and can be the source of ulcers and considerable everyday pain. Treatment can be carried out either through several laser sessions, or by surgery.

Carcinological: ablation  of cancerous periocular and eyelid lesions; reconstructive surgery, in close coordination with the multidisciplinary departments of dermatology, ENT and cancerology.

Treatment of orbital pathologies:

The orbit is the bony framework surrounding the eye, and it contains orbital fat, the extraocular muscles, the optic nerve and the ocular globe itself. It is the site of numerous inflammatory, traumatic and cancerous pathologies.

Inflammatory pathologies :  inflammation provoking exophthalmia (protrusion of the eyeballs), especially in cases of BASEDOW disease.

Tumoral pathologies:  surgery and monitoring of benign and malignant orbital tumors.

Treatment of lacrimation

Lacrimation (tearing) is a very frequent pathology with a major impact on quality of life reported by patients.  Its causes are multiple.

It can be related to excessive tear production through irritation of the ocular surface (keratitis, dry eye disease, entropion, ectropion…), and its treatments are medical and surgical.

The other very frequent cause of lacrimation is obstruction of  the natural routes of tear evacuation towards the nose: narrowing of the meatus, the canaliculus or the nasolacrimal duct

Chronic right dacryocystitis: enlarged volume of the lacrimal sac with obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct
Chronic right dacryocystitis: enlarged volume of the lacrimal sac with obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct

These pathologies are treated at the Poitiers CHU: specialized treatment in the ophthalmology department:

  • specialized lacrimation consultation,
  • adapted palpebral surgery,
  • tear duct dilation,
  • external dacryo-cysto-rhinostomy  (diversion of the lacrimal sac in the nasal cavities)
